Iris Wang Takes Gold at Brazil Int.

The US Women’s Singles player, Iris Wang (BWF #62) won the WS event on Nov. 2 at the Brazil International Badminton Cup, defeating Brazilian rising star, Lohaynny Vicente. It was her first international title since the Argentina International 2014 back in June.

Wang defeated her Pan American Championships teammate Jamie Subandhi in the semifinal.

“Since Argentina, I have been able to get good quality badminton rackets and intensive training to improve on my areas of weakness and gain more experience playing tournaments on the circuit. I am very grateful for my win, but I know there is a long journey ahead, and there are still a lot of things I need to work on,” Wang comments.

The US Men’s Doubles top pair, Phillip Chew/Sattawat Pongnairat, could not defend the title, losing to a French Pair in the semifinal.

Mixed Doubles pair, Howard Shu/Eva Lee, took third after defeating the second seed Brazilian pair. The top seed US pair, Phillip Chew/Jamie Subandhi, had a very close quarterfinal match against would-be-champions French pair in a 5-set match.

Many of world’s best badminton players are heading to China for the China Open Superseries starting Nov. 11.
